Ferguson Marine has 110 years of heritage with an exceptional reputation for shipbuilding and marine fabrication. Spray paint coating in the ship and yacht building industry has specialist spray-booth needs for handling the large components. With ship-building yards often on outdoor exposed sites, the need for a clean and dry painting environment can be a big challenge.
To complement their modern facilities they contacted Masterflo to see if we could provide them with an external retractable spray booth to accommodate some of the large fabricated ship sections. This would allow them to prep, spray and dry in a controlled and contained environment for a better quality coating and reduced re-work.
Our design team were put to the test to adapt our standard internal MASTRE-FLEX retractable spray booth concept to produce an external booth measuring 12mtr wide, 8mtr high & 20mtr long. Also, with this booth being installed outside, it had to be built to endure the harsh coastal weather conditions of the Clyde.
The retractable modules run on a heavy-duty roller channel bolted to the ground to enable ease of movement and also provide an anchor to hold it down.
The retractable booths we manufactured are extra large, at 20 mtrs in length yet very compact when not in use; rolling back from 20mtrs to only 4.4mtr!
The outcome of this booth installation is that Ferguson can now clean, prepare and paint in all weather. This, along with the better spraying environment, means that jobs are completed sooner. The larger ship sections can be lifted into place, before the giant spray booth is rolled over them into position. Having it retractable means it provides flexibility and multi-use space for other tasks and storage requirements.
